Slopes Success: Lessons propel winter sports enthusiasts to new heights

With the snowfall and on the brink of the thrilling world of winter sports, enthusiasts from Southcentral Alaska have the opportunity for skill enhancement through structured lessons at Alyeska Resort.

As Alyeska Resort staff gear up for the winter season, the demand for lessons is expected to soar.  Whether carving down beginner trails or conquering advanced slopes, enthusiasts are increasingly recognizing the pivotal role of structured instruction in unlocking their full skiing or snowboarding potential.

The snow-covered slopes of Mount Alyeska transform into classrooms, as individuals of all skill levels embrace the guidance of certified instructors.

Additionally, the camaraderie forged in group lessons contributes to a supportive learning environment. Skiers and snowboarders alike bond over shared challenges, creating a sense of community that further enhances the overall experience. Social interaction proves to be a motivating factor, encouraging participants to push their boundaries and strive for excellence.

Pomeroy Lodging Duane Stutzman, Mountain General Manager, outlined a number of camps and teams being offered by the resort:

  •  Adventure Holiday Camp – Skier and Snowboarders between 6-12 years old develop sound fundamentals in two-day session with lunch.  Dates are Dec. 23-24; Jan 6-7; Feb. 10-11; and March 9-10

  •  Fall Line Camp – Ski - Intermediate to Advanced Teens, ages 13-17, explore Alyeska over a three-day session. Dates are Dec. 27-28-29; Jan. 19-20-21; Feb. 23-24-25; and March 22-23-24

  •  Alyeska Bombers – An 8-week inclusive, non-competitive learning environment that encourages a lifelong love of skiing and riding. Age groups are 4-5, 6-12, and 13-17

  •  RIPPERS – Ski for ages 7-10. Designed to develop fundamentals and skills in young athletes, the Race Introduction Program (RIPPERS) progresses strong skiing skills through a variety of terrain. Tryouts required Dec. 10. There are 2, 14, and 26-day sessions available. 

  •  Junior Instructor Training – Skiers and Snowboarders, ages 13-15.  In this six-week program over the season, participants will engage in a variety of clinics that will develop your understanding of skiing fundamentals and skills, teaching progressions, and different teaching and learning styles..

  •  Women on Snow Ski Camp – two-day ski camp for women taught by women. Adults only.

  •  Women’s Wednesday Ski & Spa - Whether you are an intermediate or advanced skier, we will challenge you to improve your skills and confidence through six sessions with the support of your coach and group, you can pick days with spa access at an exclusive price.

These lessons not only refine the fundamental techniques of snow sports but also foster a deeper understanding of the sport, instilling confidence in novices and refining the expertise of seasoned athletes.

The structured curriculum ensures that participants not only conquer the basics but also advance to more challenging terrains with finesse.  Instructors analyze each skier or snowboarder’s unique style, addressing specific weaknesses and refining strengths. The result is a cohort of skiers who navigate slopes with newfound grace and proficiency.
