Turnagain News is non-profit, non-partisan, independent multi-media source serving Southcentral Alaska. Our vision is providing a news network that ensures all people have access to trusted news. From local news to in-depth reporting, the Turnagain News will tell stories that otherwise would go untold—connecting and informing our communities on local government while supporting democracy. We are committed to editorial independence communicating the news promoting topics such as healthcare, environment, natural history, sports, arts and education. Turnagain News promotes civic participation and embraces diverse viewpoints and cultures. We are affiliated with the Institute for Non-Profit News which includes more than 400 news organizations across North America.

Soren Wuerth has worked as editor for three Alaska weekly newspapers, winning numerous awards and pursuing issues regionally, statewide and nationally. He got his start as editor of The Northern Light, a weekly for the University of Alaska Anchorage where he majored in journalism. He has contributed stories to the Anchorage Daily News, the Associated Press, the Tundra Drums, the Anchorage Press and Insurgent49. He founded three monthly journals and is a past winner of the Suzan Nightingale Award for Best Columnist.

PUBLISHER: Jon K. Scudder

Jon grew up in Michigan and graduated from Ferris State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcasting Technology. He served 20-years on active duty with the United States Air Force. He has decades of experience managing military newspapers and communication organizations across the world. Jon currently works at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, as a Community Planner. He volunteers at Glacier City Radio, KEUL 88.9 and produces the weekly Pacifica Radio Network “Glacier Rock Show” along with providing engineering support at the station.. His hobbies include writing, music, technology, podcasting and outdoor sports. Jon is married and has family residing in the Turnagain Arm.

EDITORIAL INDEPENDENCE POLICY

The Turnagain News LLC subscribes to standards of editorial independence adopted by the Institute for Nonprofit News:

1. Our organization retains full authority over editorial content to protect the bestjournalistic and business interests of our organization. We maintain a firewall between news coverage decisions and sources of all revenue. Acceptance of financial support does not constitute implied or actual endorsement of donors or their products, services or opinions.

2. We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals and organizations for the general support of our activities, but our news judgments are made independently and not on the basis of donor support.

3. Our organization may consider donations to support the coverage of particular topics, but our organization maintains editorial control of the coverage. We will cede no right of review or influence of editorial content, nor of unauthorized distribution of editorial content.

4. We will not accept anonymous donations.

5. We subscribe to standards of editorial independence adopted by the Institute for Nonprofit News.

9. Our organization will make public (if approved, by donator) all donors who give a total of $5,000 or more per year. Donators requesting privacy will be made as required by law.

The Turnagain News is committed to transparency in every aspect of funding our organization.  Accepting financial support does not mean we endorse donors or their products, services or opinions.

DONOR TRANSPARENCY POLICY AND FUNDING SOURCES

We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals, organizations and foundations to help with our general operations, coverage of specific topics and special projects. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that operates as a public trust, we do not pay certain taxes. We may receive funds from standard government programs offered to nonprofits or similar businesses.

 Our news judgments are made independently – not based on or influenced by donors or any revenue source. We do not give supporters the rights to assign, review or edit content.  We make public all revenue sources, unless privacy is requested by the donator, who give $5,000 or more per year.

 If any conflict of interest exists or could be insinuated, a notice of explanation will be prominently posted with the story.

 As a news nonprofit, we avoid accepting charitable donations from anonymous sources, government entities, political parties, elected officials or candidates seeking public office. We will not accept donations from sources who, deemed by our board of directors, present a conflict of interest with our work or compromise our independence.
